While in high school, my son has taken several courses at the degree-granting Extension School associated with a well-known university. These courses are all designated as qualifying for undergraduate or even graduate credit (and priced accordingly). He won't end up getting a degree from this institution, though; he'll attend another college next year -- possibly in Canada. Whether that college will give him credit for some or all of these courses remains to be seen. They may, for example, recognize these courses for the purpose of allowing him to place out of introductory courses but not reduce his tuition -- that is, the number of credits he'll have to earn there -- by a corresponding amount. I don't know whether they'll list these courses on his transcript.
Are these qualified expenses regardless? May I reimburse myself for the cost of these courses? If so, is it permissible to do so now, or must I wait to see how the college he'll attend treats these courses?
Incidentally, is there some authoritative answer to questions like this posted somewhere -- perhaps on the IRS site?
