In this article, it talks about George Washington University being the most expensive school in the country at $39,000. It also mentions that the average financial aid package for an incoming freshman is $24,000.
Drew's typical point, and I agree, is that when we look at college tuition prices, "retail" is not what most people pay. (Drew, please correct me if I've mischaracterized your opinion on this subject.)

According to the Dept of Ed, 45% of students at GWU were stuck paying retail for the 2005-2006 school year. This supports the argument that most people do not pay retail, but it's still a pretty good number who do, at least at GWU.
For some people, if they have invested regularly and wisely since the birth of their child, and have been fortunate enough in their own personal investments, then they are stuck paying retail although they are still considered middle class.
You are correct, in our society we tend to charge tuition based on the genetics and planning skills of ones parents with little regard to outcomes or returns.
