anon- I don't think your 'worst case scenerio' argument holds water unfortunately. You have worst case scenerios for everything. Look, I'm invested heavily in equities for my portfolio. a 'worst case scenerio' is that we experience a 20-25 year global bear market. That should mean I should keep most of my money in fixed income investments to protect me against heavy losses. Not a good argument
Your best argument in this thread imo is for the well off families who are extremely comfortable to give them piece of mind in case the unthinkable happens to their child.
Most people who visit this board (like the majority of the population)I would assume are not extremely rich, probably are anywhere from lower to upper middle class. Most I think have a hard enough time trying to find money out of their budget for college financing....LI for children I would think s/b or is a way, way, lower priority.
