My daughter will spend 6 weeks traveling all around different European cities studying art, architecture, and composers. A second 6 weeks will be spent in residence at a European university, taking additional classes taught by professors from her US university.
We are charged three different fees: airfare which I know is not a qualified expense, tuition which is a qualified expense, and the Program Fee which includes housing, city-to city transportation, many but not all meals, museum and concert entrance fees, and health insurance. The Program Fee is paid directly to her home university.
I know travel expenses are not qualified expenses but when the intercity travel is integrated into the class for the study of art and architecture I wonder if in this case it would be qualified? The travel is part of the class itself. I would think the museum fees would also be qualified.
I know health insurance is not qualified. I believe I can get a break down of this fee so I could exclude health insurance but include housing and meals.
Any insights about this qualified versus non qualified expenses for this type of trip?
Thank you!
