Eligible educational institutions list

Hello!

i have a question on using 529 plans for my son. (< 1 yr)

i plan to setup a college savings plan. but i have a query that i could not find on google to my satisfaction.

can i use the funds in 529 to pay for my son's education for ANY college ? Example: san jose state university SJSU in san jose CA or say, berkley or Mission college santa clara CA or any other college he may choose to go to or is accepted by.

i ask because i do not see those named as ""eligible educational institutions"" as per the list found here : https://www.irs.gov/individuals/eligible-educational-inst

All three of the colleges that you mention are on the list. It would be very unusual to find a reputable college, university or vocational school in the United States that was not an eligible educational institution.

thanks for the quick response. interestingly when i filtered by the state code i did not see the colleges i referred to above.
when i specifically searched for them in the college name field i see it.

Yes that search function doesn't appear to work as advertised. Has anyone found this search capability that works?

It works for me. Do you have Excel on the device you are using? The list is in Excel format.

I do, yes. No matter what I try to search on, specific school name or nothing (which should produce the full list), it comes back with 'no results found'

Actually today if I put in the exact school name, it returns it. Which isn't real helpful of course. But the IRS is the main list anyway

If you're looking for the code or otherwise searching for a particular school, just click on the sort function button at the top right of the school column (column B) and sort alphabetically A to Z, and scroll to the school you are looking for. The school codes are all the way to the left side of the sheet in column A.
